A lot of people ask me what on earth diversity is and how I define it.  I tend to worry less about definitions than about the actual behaviors that lead us to given outcomes.  We have a lot of control over whether our behaviors lead in an uplifting and honoring direction or toward some other result.  Ultimately it’s up to us what kind of interactions we create.

I think in terms of doing things that bring me closer to others and get rid of the noise that creates ongoing conflict.  Here are a few basic ideas or “definitions” that come to mind when I think of diversity.

Diversity is a variety of people with different life experiences.

Diversity includes various outlooks and worldviews.

Diversity is a philosophy that honors and encourages differences.

Diversity is about including people at the table.

Diversity is about increasing choices.

Diversity reflects who we are and how we relate to others.

Diversity means we’re all in the same boat.

Diversity points out that we don’t all have to be the same.

Diversity proposes that we all share this planet.

There are many ways to define diversity and none of them change the basic idea that it’s really about welcoming and honoring all people.  Diversity is really a way of looking at the world as full off possibilities and opportunities to work and interact with a wide variety of people.

If you think about it, there is even diversity in our families.  No two members are alike or do things in exactly the same way.  Chances are we're even different from our parents in many ways.  The same concept applies in the workplace.  We may not all be the same but we all learn how to create a family together.

Diversity is an opportunity to create a strong group of people who work well together and collaborate to make things happen.  How would your workplace be different if everyone respected others and there was less conflict due to perceived differences?  Chances are you'd be happier and enjoy your workplace more.

I work with businesses and organizations to get rid of all those mistrusts and conflicts that arise in the workplace.  I help people focus on things that really matter like helping each other and working together.  Along the way, the participants in my trainings and seminars find out that their lives actually improve because they get along with more people.  It's much more rewarding to get to know other people and enjoy their company instead of perpetuationg conflict.

Promoting diversity is much easier when we learn the positive behaviors that people can use to get along well.  I work with groups to help them learn how to behave like the proverbial "grownups" we always hear about and honor each other.  It's not a difficult process, it just takes the commitment of the leadership of the company and the time to make it happen.

I look forward to helping you use diversity to make your life easier.  Learn more about my diversity training sevices here.
