Team Building and Effective Communication
Unconventional Training
Leaders and organizations have become increasingly aware of the benefits of a diverse workforce: better morale and motivation, improved productivity and stronger teams for example. Diversity is not just a buzzword that creates extra work for leaders and employees, it is a tangible asset that that can be used to benefit the organization.
First a brief definition of diversity. Every organization I’ve worked with defines it slightly differently and, since I don’t believe in making things more complicated than they have to be, I offer the following basic definition of diversity as it applies to the workplace:
Workplace Diversity
Creating a workplace that is uniformly inclusive and encourages meaningful participation from all individuals in the organization regardless of background.
This brief definition gets rid of a lot of the complications related to diversity. Many leaders fumble around issues like race, age, gender, disability and culture when all they really want to do is help their employees get along and be successful.
Savvy leaders and human resources departments understand the benefits of designing diversity policies that draw from the talent pool present in the company and encourage productivity and innovation. Why would any organization limit the potential of their employees unless it expressly wanted to limit its own success?
If you are a leader, a human resources professional or manager looking for ideas
to increase inclusiveness then consider the following diversity-
1. Hire employees based on qualifications required for a specific job.
2. Strive to create as varied a mix of employees in your workplace as possible.
3. Ask your leaders and managers to actively identify people’s talents and use them.
4. Encourage people to leave their prejudices at the door and give them new options.
5. Create ongoing opportunities for the growth and success of all your employees.
6. Set up a continuing diversity training program that helps individuals discuss related issues.
7. Create a comprehensive written strategy for encouraging diversity in your workplace.
8. Practice these approaches continuously until they become part of the company culture.
Diversity is not a mystery and is easily assimilated into the culture of any organization when leadership and management are on board from the beginning. The rewards are significant. Many companies report increased innovation, productivity, morale and team effectiveness when they implement a thoughtful plan to build diversity.
Diversity is not a destabilizing force it is an opportunity to harness the power of the amazing talents of your workforce. Those who understand this potential can use it to succeed. What will you do to encourage diversity in your workplace?
Take care,
Guy
