I've been providing diversity training in Reno for many years and I always enjoy helping proactive leaders and organizations discover how to use it to improve workplace functioning. Diversity is about building strong relationships with others so we can all benefit from creating a more effective workplace. We often get caught up in the superficial aspects we call differences while forgetting how much we really have in common. Building connections with other people is one of the most direct ways to get rid of a “difference based” model of diversity.
When we focus solely on differences we tend to think and behave in ways that emphasize the things we don’t share. If, however, we give more importance to simply building relationships with each other we tend to look for the things that will bring us closer together and help us work collaboratively.
Building relationships is an elegant solution to many workplace challenges and it can make a world of difference in how our organizations function. Imagine how your organizations would run if people trusted each other and connected on a deeper level, for example. When people consciously put their efforts toward bonding with each other and promoting meaningful interaction, differences vanish and we become aware of the possibilities we can create together. Most diversity training focuses on the things that are diffferent about us, I focus on the things we have in common because they tend to bring us closer rather than creating new conflicts.
My approach to diversity doesn't harrass people or force them to be someone they're not. I help you focus your energy on helping your employees work well together by learning and practicing positive thinking patterns and behaviors. The goal is to increase understanding and collaboration between individuals and groups.
