When you practice effective communication it shows other organizations a lot about how you conduct business and what they can expect when they deal with you professionally. An idea that often comes up when I train leaders, managers and employees is how to communicate in a way that invites other people to want to interact with us. The following ideas will help you put your best foot forward and communicate confidently and effectively.

Listen actively. It’s amazing what you can learn when you’re not talking. You also get to gather information so that you can make better decisions.

Say what you have to say briefly. Less is more in effective communication . Everyone’s time is valuable and brevity helps us get our point across without throwing in the kitchen sink. It will also help you not have to backtrack on things you wish you hadn’t said.

Behave professionally. Business communication is not the ideal time to discuss personal problems or pry into people’s private lives. Keep the conversation as professional as possible and focus on work-related topics.

Keep your temper under control. If you get angry or upset it not only shuts down communication but also reduces the likelihood that the other person will give you another chance in the future.

People aren’t trying to hurt you. Remind yourself that communication glitches aren’t a personal slight against you, they are just part of interacting with others. People just see the world in different ways.

Learn how to resolve conflict. Brainstorm with the other person to develop some ideas on how to deal with a given issue and agree on a solution that works for both of you. The goal is to collaboration well.

Develop a communication plan that guides your practices. Help your employees learn and practice effective communication skills together so that everyone is on the same page.

Other leaders and organizations judge us much in the same way our clients do. How we communicate says a lot to the people watching us about how we conduct business. If they like what they see and feel good about interacting with us they are far more likely to want to continue the conversation. Keep these tips in mind as you interact with other leaders and organizations and you’ll be on your way to increasing your success exponentially.
