Team Building and Effective Communication

Unconventional Training

When I work with leaders and managers we frequently talk about what a huge difference effective communication in the workplace makes.  There’s no aspect of workplace functioning that isn’t touched by improving communication skills.

Think about it for a moment: What if all your leaders and managers knew how to communicate not only clearly and concisely but also in a way that motivated employees to feel great and do better work?  What if your employees communicated at a level where misunderstandings and conflicts where a thing of the past?

A lot of leaders and companies think that they’re stuck with the communication style that they currently have but, in reality, there are practical techniques that can be used to improve workplace functioning in any organization.  Effective communication can help you in many ways including:

1.  Communicating at a deeper level.  Get to know your employees strengths better and understand what motivates them.  Gather better information so you can make more informed leadership and management decisions.

2.  Listening actively.  Listen for content and really understand what people are saying rather than what you think they are saying.  Make more accurate and clearer decisions because you genuinely know what people mean.

3.  Running smoother meetings.  Our regular meeting style is a gigantic free-for-all.  Get more done with less effort and fewer distractions.  Facilitate meetings that energize people instead of making them angry or confused.

4.  Making sure people understand what you say.  Say it fewer times but with greater accuracy.  Do away with assumptions and having to repeat things a million times.

5. Decrease misunderstandings.  Give yourself and your employees a clearer understanding of what you’re saying.  Communicate in a way that gets your point across and encourages a meeting of the minds.

I enjoy training creative leaders in effective communication because it makes their work lives easier and promotes better workplaces.  If I have a choice between working in a place where communication is haphazard and one where people do it well I’ll always choose the latter because it’s just more enjoyable.

Our workplaces don’t have to be a communication mess.  Leaders have a lot of control over how everyone communicates in their place of business.  What will you do to get the process started?
