Effective communication is much easier once you let go of the things you currently do and consciously add new approaches to your tool box. Many leaders are accustomed to devoting a lot of time to communicating in ways that are actually counterproductive rather than taking some time up front to hone their communication skills. Here are some practical ideas so you can improve your workplace communication.
1. Worry less about the what you’re saying and more about how you say it. Tone and body language are important tools to get your message across well.
2. Keep messages brief instead of complicated. Avoid the urge to say a million things and focus instead on selecting the most important information.
3. Ask your employees for feedback. Be open to suggestions and ideas on how to improve your workplace communication.
4. Focus on other people. Communication isn’t just about what you have to say, other people matter as well..
5. Don’t say it if you’re angry. Make sure to deal with people from a position of kindness and understanding.
6. Listen a lot. Focus less on talking and more on what your employees have to say.
Balanced leaders understand that effective communication isn’t just about the words being said or disseminated. It’s about the tone and work environment they create. Think of a time you worked with someone who really understood how to communicate. How did you feel and how did they do it? What will you do to become an excellent communicator?
