How well do you deal with emotions in your workplace?  Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage your and others' emotions in a positive way.  It's a vital leadership and workplace skill because it gets rid of a lot of the discomfort, friction and drama that occurs in workplaces that don't know how to deal with emotions.

Emotions are a natural part of any workplace, human beings just feel differently at different times.  The key to emotional intelligence is to use it so that your actions don't affect your colleagues, employees and workplace negatively.  Here are some practical ideas to help you deal with emotions in your workplace.

1.  Emotions are normal.

2.  It's what you do with the emotions that matters.

3.  No single emotion is better than another.

4.  People feel better once their emotions are validated.

5.  You create healthier boundaries when you are comfortable with emotions.

6.  You can't ignore emotions, they're always there.

7.  Happiness and anger aren't the only two emotions in the workplace.

8.  You build trust when you allow people to express their emotions.

9.  Leaders don't let their own emotions affect their employees negatively.

10.  Emotions can help you identify areas that need attention.

Think about it for a moment, emotions can give you many clues to the health of your workplace if you pay attention.  The challenge in many organizations is to move away from treating emotions as something that should be avoided at all costs.  It's more productive to be comfortable with the entire range of emotions that humans experience instead of trying to pretend that the only emotions that exist in the workplace are fake happiness, anxiety or anger.

There are no rules to emotions in the workplace, you get to decide whether you use them in a positive way or let them take another course.  They can be a powerful tool to help you design successful workplaces or can bring everything to a screeching halt based on your actions.

We've been told that certain emotions don't have a place in our workplaces and then we go out and get angry at each other.  Emotions permeate our workplaces whether we acknowledge it or not.  Many leaders are accutely uncomfortable with emotions in the workplace when they could be using them to be even more productive and successful.  What will you do to promote emotional intelligence in your workplace?
