Team Building and Effective Communication

Unconventional Training

Soft skills are the misunderstood sibling of the readily quantifiable hard skills many leaders and workplaces value such as sales, production, equipment operation, accounting and safety reports.  Leaders and organizations get so focused on generating quantifiable numbers that they forget that there is a huge part of their operation that relies on soft-skills (or people skills) such as leadership, communication, team building, collaboration, problem-solving, conflict resolution and running meetings to be successful.

The bottom line for most organizations depends on people and the work they do yet very little time is spent helping individuals develop into great leaders and managers. I work with many different organizations and I have yet to encounter one that can ignore soft-skills and still run a healthy organization.  Most leaders and employees are highly motivated and caring professionals but they have no idea how to combine hard numbers with excellent people skills.

Many leaders treat soft skills as an afterthought to the point that they think a single one-hour training can dramatically improve how their employees communicate, build teams or resolve conflict.  These people have good intentions but may not realize that it takes considerable time and effort for training to change the behaviors in any organization.  It takes time to learn new skills and time to unlearn the old ones that got you where you are now.  Here are ten practical ideas to improve your chances of soft skills training success.

1.  Make time for the training and make it a long-term program.

2.  Help your employees practice new skills.

3.  Get leadership involved at the very beginning.

4.  Budget for appropriate training.

5.  Focus on developing positive workplace behaviors.

6.  Make the training fun, not punishment.

7.  Everyone is highly encouraged to attend.

8.  Set specific goals so you can measure along the way.

9.  Train your own staff so they can train others.

10. Make soft skills training part of your company values and culture.

Try these practical ideas and you’ll notice your training approach shifts and creates greater changes in how your organization functions.  Productive soft skills training is about leaders and organizations committing to make it succeed.
