Team Building and Effective Communication
Unconventional Training
Team building is a valuable tool you can start using in your organization at any time you’re ready to create a culture of collaboration. All you need to do is have the desire to do it and take the time to create a team building program that helps people learn positive behaviors. Here are some practical ideas to helps you get an effective team building program started in your workplace.
1. Set up a weekly, ongoing team building meeting. This will help you practice behaviors and show your staff you are really committed to creating a continuing team building program.
2. Find activities that help people build relationships and talk with each other on a deeper level. When people connect below the surface they learn about each other, build empathy and understand each other better.
3. Find a facilitator who knows how to bring people together. It’s valuable to have someone run your team building seminars who understands how people interact and keeps the process flowing smoothly.
4. Focus on people’s behaviors; what they will actually do to be better team players. When people learn positive behaviors they have something tangible to practice.
5. Set up a calm, friendly atmosphere with no interruptions. Focus solely on team building activities.
6. Everyone, especially leadership, should be involved. It’s great when team building is learned first by the leaders and then they show other departments how to do it. This approach builds relationships and shows employees that leadership cares.
7. It doesn’t matter what activities you do as long as people are actively interacting on a deeper level. The idea is to get people working together and learning about each other in order to build a sense of collaboration.
8. Please stay away from competitive activities where someone “wins.” Team building is about helping people work collaboratively rather than against each other in any way.
9. Emphasize people behaving kindly, gently, and with empathy. These types of behaviors will eventually be the new way of doing things in your workplace and will lead to more positive results and a happier workplace.
10. Have fun and keep doing it over time. Stick with it and you’ll get positive results. Enjoy the process and don’t be afraid to try new things.
The secret to effective team building is to set up a work environment where people feel comfortable and trust each other. There are no rules you have to follow, simply remember that you’re trying to help people connect in ways that are meaningful to them. What will you do to get the process started?
